I can recommend a couple recordings. If you like vintage playing that emphasizes the autumnal character of the piece, Karl Leister with the Amadeus Qt achieve a lofty standard with decent analogue stereo sound. In modern SACD sound, the version by the Prazak Qt with Pascal Moragues is a vital reading in great sound on Praga Digitals.
Follow Ups:
Brahms with the Brandis quartet (Concert master of BPO for some time)
WIth the Leipzig string quartet (MDG, 2010)

and with Vermeer string quartet (Orfeo, 93)
Leister is my favorite clarinetist
Also: Kjell Fageus and friends on Opus 3, and Martin Frost and friends (one of whom is JJ!) on BIS.
Leister is a brilliant player but alas the Amadeus, with the gypsy style first violinist is not my credo. Have a recording of the Bush but no longer find it emotionally accessible these days.Keep on suggesting. Some where I recall a Bartok QT version but I am uncertain. Their Brahms playing is excellent. There is also an old recording of the FINE ARTS QUARTER WITH KELL, that I admired way back when but the American pressings are unlistenable on CONCERT DISC.
Might mention that I find the QUARTETTO ITALIAN Brahms playing vigorous but INTELLECTUAL AND LUSH.
Oddlt thanks to these postings find the need for Brahms chamber music at this time. Even played the Columbia Budapest recording of the string quintedt and enjoyed it. Thanks all!.
