Pretty hard to put a screen around an orchestra musician as they are rehearsing with the orchestra in order to see if they are a good fit.
More to a good orchestra musician than just reading music and sounding good playing it.
A friend tried out with the San Francisco Symphony some many years ago and never got past the initial 'screened' audition.
That there are additional steps in the process, makes sense. It's not like they're going to pass the employment contract over or under a screen.
Follow Ups:
Put the screen around the individualwho is auditioning. Really easy actually
Institutional racism can be practiced by the most liberal, kind-hearted of people. "I just feel more comfortable..." is the subliminal thought. It is a most natural one. That is why steps must be taken or orchestras, like any other institution, will resemble the majority, "kindly" excluding anyone "different."
