What is the advantage to using an Xlr cable on an active monitor if the other end is Rca on the preamp?

If your powered monitor / amplifier has a proper differential/balanced input, much of the noise rejection / cmrr is available with a properly configured rca to balanced XLR cable. Specifically, a shielded, twisted pair cable with the twisted pair connected to the RCA and and pins 2 & 3 of the XLR and the shield connected as a telescoping shield connected only to pin 1 of the XLR.
Look at fig. 17 of the Rane paper referenced below.

No.
With a Balun you can do it!
Real Baluns are expensive, though.
