I have an option of purchasing a VDH Revelation Hybrid cable from a current owner. It is soldered & terminated on a bus connector.
I was wondering if this is the correct termination and hence visited the VDH website. The website gives only the details of matching of cable and connector for the improved Berri BUS connector, and not the old bus connector.
From what I can read, 1) both bus and Berri bus are mechanical fits, and there is no soldering required 2) the Berri bus recommended is for a 13.2mm JACKET diameter 3) the maximum CONDUCTOR diameter of the old bus connector is 10mm.
I dont want to invest in a BERRI Bus which is quite expensive as this cable already has 8 banana BUS connector. My question is,
1) can VDH revelation be mechanically terminated on the bus connector? 2) is 10mm conductor diameter bus connector the right match for VDH revelation
Would greatly appreciate any comments. Thanks a ton.

Just to explain further, the current termination of the bus connector on the cable is done by soldering and is very shabbily done so will need to get it re-done. So if it has been wrongly soldered, and neednt have been soldered at all, but only fitted mechanically, there there is good value. Else I will have to take a lot of trouble for soldering this, as it is supposed to be a very difficult cable to solder.
The most effortful aspect of termination would be properly stripping the 17 individually insulated conductor bundles per leg, which would involve 68 stripped conductor bundles in total for both channels/both ends. The threaded base of the VDH Universal Speaker Connector features a solder bucket intended for solder termination, not mechanical termination such as crimping. Re-soldering should not be too difficult if the cables are properly prepped for re-termination. When finished, make sure to apply sturdy heat shrink tubing over the cable ends to act as robust strain relief.
Duster, thanks. So 1) it is not mechanical but only soldering. 2) what you refer to as the Universal Speaker connector is I suppose what I am reading on their website as the Bus connector 3) the 17 strands in each lead - I suppose you mean that they should be properly stripped, but thereafter smoothly bunched along with the core wire and this whole bunch should be dipped into the solder bucket and soldered. Is this correct? thanks a ton.
1) Yes.
2) Yes.
3) The 17 individually insulated stranded conductors need to be stripped and prepped in a manner that allows them to be gathered together into one large bundle of wires which can then be inserted into the solder bucket of the VDH connector base, then soldered. Pre-tinning the bundle of wires with solder before insertion into the solder bucket of the connector base would be my method of choice.
You may be able to detect the machination of the conductor bundling under the heat shrink as shown here (see link):
Duster, thanks. This makes it clear. I don't know soldering myself in terms of skill, but can supervise a skilled person on this basis.
But in the end it makes me wonder why VDH did not put all the 17 strands bunched up along with the core into a single core. But that is a subject for a separate study on another day.
