Hi, not yet finished building the foreplay, but cannot resist asking - How does a stock Foreplay compare to some of the pre's out there? Will it way below say a rogue 66, or close?
Would appreciate anybody who compared their Foreplay with a "commercial" pre. Thanks
Follow Ups:
I used to own a Rogue 66 preamp and it was a dog compared to the Foreplay. The Rogue had a lifeless sound and did not mate well with any of the componants I tried it with. I sent the Rogue back, I also sold my Conrad Johnson pv 10a for the same reason. The foreplay is much more open sounding and realistic. The dynamics are unbelieveable and it just sounds more like music to me.
I replaced an Audible Illusions Modulus 3 with a humming, spitting, cold-solder-joint FP full of bad tubes. The FP sounds better which means I never have to deal with the AI people again...alone worth the price of burned fingers. Now if Doc would only create a phono amp...SDAWG
It replace a top of the line NAD pre. Hands down winner. My wife commented on the improvement duribg the first evening of burn in.Enjoy,

I had a SS Forte Model 2 preamp for many years, and the Foreplay even in its stock version sounds much, much better.I've listened to a CJ10 (I think that's the model)and my tweaked FP is all-around better. The CJ is beautiful and lush on classical and strings, but overall is too mushy, especially on rock, for my tastes.
Buy it. Build it. Enjoy it. You will not regret it.
In the process you'll learn a hell of a lot, too.
Thanks - I got the foreplay, but not yet finished.
Finding the time..
I know what you mean about no time...I've had a few 2 am bedtimes building and tweaking...
Good luck!
