I have had my Dac 2.1 for nearly 4 years of pure pleasure until last week when it suffered a dramatic failure with flames appearing from the vents!
Fortunately I switched it of very quickly (the fuse did not blow and in a Titanic style the 'DAC played on') but as the photo shoes it did spontaneously combust.
It appears there has been a failure of R11 on the Analogue power supply board that has also destroyed C10 and probably C8 and maybe the 6X5 valve.
If anyone can help with the following questions I would be grateful -
Has anyone else suffered this failure, The PSU resistors are the standard Beschlags (0.5w I think).
What might be the cause of it?
Moving forward - I think I will need a new PSU board, would the new M2-x board work on the older kits or should I stick with a standard PSU board?
Many thanks

same thing happened to me when i turn on the kit , R11 get really hot and start smoking.
so i turn it off . check the circuit , replace R11 with a 7watt Res and C10 with a mundorf MKP ( auto repair 800V AC) . turn on and nothing get hot anymore during this last month...

Actually, it's hardly a resistor failure. Most probably C10 got shorted and took R11 with him. In this case R11 acted as a fuse and there were not enough current in the primary to blow the actual fuse. Let’s see… 15K / ~600v – resistor got 40ma , so about 200mA extra load on primary (not enough to kill the fuse) and 24W load on resistor (sure resistor can’t survive).
Just remove R11 and C10 and test voltage.
Cheers!
Hi
As Joachim pointed out the snubber failed... and while not vital to the power supply, it does help to keep things quiet. By the way, the Beyschlags on your p.s. board are 1W.
Hopefully your cap and rectifier are only cosmetically scarred, and can be cleaned up. On the cap use neat white vinegar.... on the recifier valve... very fine steel wool.
Yes, the M2-X is 100% compatible with your DAC 2.1. Howevere if you want the ultimate version of the M2 power supply, e-mail me for details on the M2-R. I have two DAC 2.1's here right now (with the 12au7 boards, another nice enhancement) in a side by side comparison. One has the M2-X power supply, the other the M2-R. The sonic difference is amazing. It is not just the 0B2 tube, although that plays a major role.... every component on the board is upgraded. The bass is tighter and more extended, the midrange (like female vocals) is more creamy and palpable, and the highs have a more three dimensional effect. The xylophone on Jazz at the Pawnshop is in the room !
I will have pictures and details up on my website soon.... but right now I just so busy building and enhancing Kits.

I have thediscerningear M2-R Power supply Board in my Dac 2.1. The Sound quality is a whole new level improvement.
I highly recommend you allow thediscerningear to upgrade your Power supply boards!

How big is C3 and C5?

I'm sure you're busy but ...I'm waiting for a word from you. Yes, no ,maybe????
Sorry , to hijack the thread a little and to put things in perspective one more picture.
PS ;To OP -good luck fixing your dac ,I'm sure it's just a single component failure since the dac "sunk singing" ;0)
Hi!
It seems your snubber circuit blew up. The same thing happened to me some time ago, but in my case the capacitor/resistor combination was soldered to the transformer directly. An ugly smell came out of the box and the fuse blew. The snubber circuit is not essential for operation, that's why your DAC played on. I simply removed the resistor and capacitor.
I have since upgraded the DAC to 3.1 status, but the DAC was working flawlessly in the few months before the upgrade.
All the best
Joachim
