The connections at the speaker end. Do you have an ohm meter? How is your eyesight? It only takes one strand

Hey, thanks for the responses everybody! There's a new wrinkle: just so I'd have some music to listen to, I put my trusty old Setton RS-440 receiver into the system. When I fired it up one channel played very low and the protection light flickered off and on a few times. Turning off the power (quickly!) i discovered that there was, indeed, a short inside one of the speakers where a solder joint had gone bad at the speaker terminals. I fixed that, and now the Setton is singing beautifully. It'll be a day or so before I have time to check the fuses on the Rotel and try it out in the system, but I think I may have found the culprit here.
