I was quite amazed a few years ago to see a post (don't recall which site) suggesting the best way to clean vintage components was to first remove all tubes (if present) and place the unit in a dishwasher, cover off of course.
I've only used a vacuum cleaner and a very stiff brush.

Because? I'll personally guarantee that each & every transformer is fully "potted" and completely impervious to moisture.
The rest of the "bits & pieces?" Yeah, they might fail - but caps, diodes, resistors, & such are just a quick visit to "mouser.com" :)
