I recently moved so two things have happened. My listening space has changed and I had to unhook and resort all my equipment.
For several years I've had a NAD C275BEE power amp. I always felt this was a VERY good amp but ""I"" could not get this thing into the right situation. For what ever reasons????
Since all my equipment was still apart and uncabled I decided to give the old mix and match a try while it was still easy to do.
After many many different arrangements, a flurry of cables and long story short (please appreciate this) I've come to the conclusion that the NAD C275BEE is a great sounding amp if used with a simple passive 25k Goldpoint attenuator and the input selector switch set to variable 100k input. I can't find or hear any shortcomings with this simple elegant setup.
So now I have three great setups - no order intended here!!!!
1 Dynaco VTA ST-70 amp with Conrad Johnson Classic 2SE preamp
2 Sherwood S-5000 integrated amp
3 NAD C275BEE with passive attenuator
As many of you have notice over the years I like to rotate my setup every few weeks to keep things spicy.
Follow Ups:
NAD's are 'better' sounding than 80% of.. all...available gear.
Not of massive Snob appeal though.
Which in itself speaks Volumes.
NAD gear is well regarded by many, and pooh-poohed by some who think that MORE$$$=ALWAYS BETTER SOUND.
For example, Wayne Picquet who runs Quads Unlimited likes using an NAD power amp to listen to Quad 57's. By all accounts he is among the best re-builders of original Quads, and most folks feel the ESL-57 is a very "right" sounding speaker (aside from limited dynamics unless you use multiple stacked pairs - as Wayne does...) That's a damn good endorsement.
There's lots of other good amps out there, too, but the NAD's should not be sneered at.
Their other components also deliver good sound for a fair price. Their phono stages are a cut above the average, and their tuners also had some features to make them a bit more musical, even if they weren't the best DX machines.
I have a 2600 amplifier, the thing can put out gobs of power / high current and sounds fairly smooth and tunefull.
I'm a NAD fan. NAD has always made excellent value gear. I am currently interested in the new NAD C 368 (there is also a 338 and 388) Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifier. Many will not give them a thought either because of their price or because of the switch mode power supplies and Class D output stages. That's too bad - for them!
