Actually the LS5/8 mainly used special Quad 405 amps with built in electronic crossovers and reduced power from the tweeter amp. I had a pair for about a month and wrote a review for Stereophile.

I am sure that you are correct. The 405 came out in 1975 and the BBC monitors I was thinking of were seen by me in around 1972. So I assume that , in fact, they may have been the LS5/8's predecessor the LS5/5 ( memory does play tricks).
