Hello
I would like to buy a second hand Yamaha power amp from the Natural Sound Series. There are quite a few possibilities: B2, M2 M-45 - M-70.
Is there anybody knowing how these amplifiers sound when driving ESL speakers like Martin Logan Vantage ?
Best regards
Tigro

Aren't all Yamaha audio products designated "NS", i.e., "Natural Sound"?
All of those will sound OK after all the electrolytics have been replaced.
If the B2 breaks, none of the FETs are available.
I have 2 Yamaha P-2200 pro power amps that I went through and replaced all of the electrolytics. They are part of the 'Natural Sound' series. I use one for bass duty in a biamped system, and I have never experienced an amp that goes as deep with that type of authority.
It never seems to run out of steam. Very impressive build quality as well!

Hello Hornlover
Thank you for your answer
Tigro
the B2 was great!
I also had for a VERY brief time the m2 - I wasn't that impressed with it. Very generic. However the M45 was much nicer. but the B2 was the best. It sounded very clean and still very musical. The 45 was a tad cleaner sounding but again, very musical. Either one you can't go wrong with.

I owned the C-2x preamplifier and B-2x power amplifier back in the day. They were the top-of-the-line Yamaha components in 1984 / 1985. Therefore, the B-2x would be my recommendation if 170-wpc is sufficient for your purposes.Good luck,

The Yamaha B2 is a special amplifier, which, along with a few amps from Sony, used VFET output transistors. Properly looked after, all these VFET amps are good, reliable units with a reputation for a 'smooth' or 'slightly sweet' high end and 'solid' bass.
HOWEVER as previously mentioned the VFET output transistors in these products ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE ANYWHERE AT ANY PRICE. A replacement VFET will show up on Ebay from time to time, but it's likely that any failure of the output stage of any of these amplifiers will require a handful of VFETs, not just one. So, typically, if one of these amplifiers fails, it likely cannot be repaired.
That said, they are prized units and if you get one be sure to read everything you can about their care. The Sony amps are noted for blowing up if certain of their original diodes are not replaced. There may be similar protective steps an owner could take with a B2, too- any B2 owner would be wise to find out everything they can about such matters before plugging the amp in.
Another warning I've seen with the Sony VFET amps is a stern caution against ever using a variac to "slowly bring up" such an amplifier. I suspect that might apply to the B2 as well.
