A friend of mine wants to buy my AVR and I'm thinking of breaking down and going to separates in the HT.
Any experience with/thoughts on these two amps?

I know you've bought something already. Both would be a decent choice, Emo possibly having an edge in power where I lean toward Marantz for sound. Although if just HT, sound may not be that important.
My friend has the newer Marantz 8077 5-channel, he has driven a full Monitor Audio Gold & now Revel Ferforma 3 speaker set ups with no problems. And, the Marantz A/V preamps have been excellent values.
I like Marantz a lot. I have one of their AVR's now.

It offers great performance with plenty of power for HT systems given its modest cost.
I drive it with a UPC-200 processor (see system details). Wifey (the family videophile) uses it daily.
Never mind, just ordered a Cambridge Audio CXR200.

My son has the XPA-5 for his all-Emo setup. It is a great amp for HT. I'll never get another receiver. That amp with a separate processor or just using the line outs from your existing receiver, assuming it has those, is a great approach. BTW, Emotiva has a summer sale happening now. 10% off.
I do not know anything about this particular amp but when I was looking for something similar ( never did buy anything ) I was concerned that Marantz sometimes only rate their AV amps into 6 ohms and often they don't rate into any specific load which leads me to believe you would have to mate them carefully with speakers that present a higher impedance.
Don't know if it actually does that, but that's how they spec it.

and it will play sufficiently loudly even for blockbusters like Avatar. :)
