Greetings, I'm separating my home theater and music systems and in the process migrating to tubes for the music system. I'm awaiting arrival of my CJ PV10B and would like some suggestions on a good tube amp to match with it. I'm willing to buy used and prefer not to spend more than $1500. My speakers are Snell Type D, Sota Comet turntable w/ Grado cartridge, Audio Alchemy digital front end. I'm new to tubes and want the most synergistic & musical bang for the buck. Thanks in advance for any replies / recommendations.

Welcome! Brian-
perhaps a CJ Classic Sixty?
Thanks for all the input. I'm still on the fence, mostly narrowed down to either an MV-55 or Latino ST-120. Also considering Rogue Audio. I just want the best match with my PV10B and Snell Type D's.
My vote is the ST-120. This way you have control over how far you want to upgrade parts. THAT'S what makes the difference!
Thanks for all the input so far folks. I'm still looking, any thoughts on Rogue Audio Atlas Magnum or VTL ST150 working well with my CJ & Snells?
I quite like my Rogue Audio Stereo 90 and see them occasionally used for $1500 or less. Good amp stock, if you upgrade the caps and other parts it becomes very good. A modern sounding amp, not very "tubey" at all, just might compliment the CJ preamp.
Thanks again to everyone for the replies. I just agreed to purchase a used Rogue Audio Atlas Magnum with the KT120's, hopefully it will mate well with my CJ PV10B and keep my Snell D's free of hunger. Once the amp arrives and I finalize moving equipment, I'll definitely report on how the system sounds. Cheers!
Oh and I'm still considering a Bob Latino VTA ST-150 and a Jolida JD502P.
Quicksilver Mid Mono amps. They would be a nice match with the CJ. They usually go for about $1200 used. Check out the Quicksilver Audio site for information!
I have a c-j Classic 2SE with the Quicksilver Mid Monos and they sound great together. I paid $1050 and they were only 18 months old and like new... really wanted the c-J Classic 60 but I have a kid in college right now. Built like a tank and can accept many different output tubes: EL34 (stock) 6L6, KT 66, KT 77, KT 88, KT90, 6550, 5881, and a few more. Great amps for the money, so good that if I do ever upgrade I will keep them.
It's a good thing you could not pull the CJ's. You are better off with the QS's. Mike makes outstanding gear! A true bargain!
So you don't recommend a CJ amp to go with the CJ preamp? I've already bought the used PV10B, just awaiting its arrival.
You asked about amps. The CJ is a great preamp. I said for under $1500 the QS would be a good match with the CJ. Of course a CJ amp would be great!
Ok thanks for the info on the QS's, I'll keep an eye out for them.
Good luck with your search!
would you be open to a kit?
Hi, I'm certainly not against a kit. Would it be a synergistic match with my PV10B and deliver enough power to my Snells? I listen to quite a variety of musical genres.
I ran both a Bob Latino ST 70 and ST 120 for years with my CJ Premiere 3. Wonderful combination and quite affordable, even if you have it factory assembled which I highly recommend.(along with the modest cap upgrades) The QS Mid-Monos, already mentioned, are a another great choice. The used CJ amps in the most affordable range would probably be the MV 50, 52 and 55. However, all are a bit long in the tooth and would probably need some reconditioning.
I've had a few ST-70's and yes - it has "balls".
No matter which choice you make, DO remember this, Quality parts/design should be the most important part of your decision.
That's what makes the CJ so special in the first place. I just go my CJ Classic 2SE. And tubes do match wonderfully well with it.
I had the original ST70 with the EL34's and the 120 equivalent with the 6550 or KT88. My heart does lean towards a nice EL34. Simply magical midrange. The 120 is great if you need tons of power. But don't be fooled by the EL34s. They can push your speakers around pretty darn well.
Either way. The 120 assembled with tubes AND Russian K40-y paper in oil caps is still under $1500.
Do a search on reviews of both.

I had a pair of those years ago. Originals, not the new kit. KT88's were NICEEEEE!!!!!. tons of power and still maintained the wonderful tube quality.
When it comes to tubes, or any audio product for that matter, it all comes down to quality parts. These kits use pretty much the best you're going to get with few exceptions.
It would be a wise choice for the original poster to consider one. Considering again, parts quality!

It is now on my ever changing short list...
I seem to have gone from vintage, class A based Solid state back to some tubes designs (mainly DIY this time), based on my previous love affair with my now gone ARC D76a...
Guess I should post the ideas/ideals up here again and let everyone have at it/speculate?
And yes, I concur- those wouldn't be too bad a compliment for the OP's consideration...
Cheers,
