I recently picked up an SA 1000 in good condition, and can use it "as is" with a modified Marcof PPA2 headamp driving the "High Output" setting of the preamp. However, I don't have the Manual nor does one appear to be available online, except at a very high price.
Would anybody have the experience or manual who could tell me where the internal jumpers should be set to handle a low-output MC cartridge? Sure would appreciate it. Thanks.

Five years later and just made the latest improvement to the SA-1000 by adding the SA-2 headamp to the system. No problems with the SA-2, unlike way back in the 80's when I owned one of the earliest units. Match made in heaven.

Okay, so I spoke to the man. Bad news is that he sold his business about the same time that the Counterpoint thousand series was introduced, so he had no direct experience with the 1k. On the other hand, I described the two sets of four-pin jumpers and how it appeared that LO was on pins one and two, and that the question was whether or not HO was on pins 2 and 3, or on pins 3 and 4. He replied that HO would almost certainly be on pins 3 and 4. He has more than a bit of experience/knowledge in repairing and building amps, and his further comment was that the chances the two settings would share a pin were slim to none. So, again, FWIW, that's alls I know. Hope this somehow helps.

Thanks. That is great info .... which seems in line with another reply I got over on the Vinyl forum. Guess it is worth a try.

Do what John suggests and use your headamp. By Mike Elliott's own admission, the MC performance of that pre kind of sucks and my bet is the headamp into the MM input will sound better.
In stock form maybe that is true but once that whole phono section in the SA-1000 is upgraded. it's just sounds really nice! far better than stock mode. I know cause I did it! ;)
The MC side which I use with my Teres/Shelter 901/ET-2 was just amazing!
He may very well be right about his own design. But the Accuphase AC-2 likes a very low 47ohm (not K ohm)resister setting, and there is room to add the resisters to this setting, so I would like to try it and see for myself how it compares.

FWIW, I found this thread over at DIY. I'll ping my pal the ex C'point dealer tomorrow and see if he's got any idea.
Thanks very much for your help.

Understand. I'd probably want to do the same thing. I owned an SA3000 for nearly 20 years. I ultimately had Mike kill the MC Jfets from the phono section and I used an SUT into the MM inputs for my 0.5mv MC. It had plenty of gain that way and was super quiet. Anyway, the 3k had a set of toggle switches and spots on the board for inserting resistors. As I recall, the 1k had jumpers as you described, but it's been so long ago I can't remember how to set them. A friend used to be a Counterpoint dealer. I'll ask him and see if he can remember. In the meantime, maybe somebody will jump in with the answer.
I can't help you with the jumpers, but if you are using a moving coil headamp, it is designed to be connected to a 47k-ohm moving magnet input.
Good luck,
John Elison
Thanks, John. The headamp is currently input into that high output setting, which I am sure is at the standard 47K. But the low output cartridge setting cannot operate without the correct jumper configuration, which must be changed to tap the extra gain stage.
