I have a Wright WLA12a pre-amp, it is a nice pre-amp but it has alot of gain (12/20db switchable). Would it be difficult to modify this to a lower gain? I do not have a schematic.
Thanks Bob

Almost any mod you do will exact payment in the form of degraded sound. You really are best off working with the volume control.
Try posting over at the tweak/DIY forum.Generally speaking, if you have too much gain, you can simply modify the volume control. Look over at the FAQ's section of GoldPoint audio.
with a schematic if you can attach it.

What would the typical amount of gain be?
If you take the route of volume pot modification, which others have suggested, the "typical" amount of gain reduction could be customized to your specific needs.
Goldpoint is wealth of info on this topic.
There is a tradeoff though......HF roll off. Done properly that can be trivial.
You are going to have to work that out on you system and suited for your needs. If you want to use the wiring method for GoldPoint than try this.
Go to radioshack and buy the 100 bulk pack of 1/2 watt resistors.
Solder a pig tail onto the volume pot connections.
And just try each level of attenuation - start at the middle. It's just easier that way.
