Volume steps are larger than 1 dB, which IMHO is less than high-end spec. Ridiculous for $10k integrated to have larger steps than $500 HT receiver.
Fail.
Sounds pretty good, a friend of mine bought one and did prefer it to the Devialet. The volume control is a very special unique design.
The Stereophile AX-5 review is complementary and the measurements reasonable for the size and power rating of the amplifier. The diamond circuit amplifier and motorized switched attenuator volume control are unusual engineering choices befitting an Ayre component. At $9995, the domestic demand for a basic integrated amplifier will surely be small, but Europe and Asia may prove to be more viable markets.
As the price is likely to be 40% higher in the UK as with most products from the US I do not think it is viable at all. I personally find all Ayre products to be very overpriced and of the few I have auditioned the sound was only average.

Here is the Stereophile review for those who have not seen it yet:

Have you auditioned it yet?
I have not auditioned it. I was hoping to hear from folks who have directly compared the new integrated against the other Ayre stacks before even contemplating selling my k-1xe and v-1xe.
I wasn't happy that this picture was published. The product is far from finished, so we can't say much about features, price, nor specs. We also don't have a very good idea of when it will be released. Sorry, guys.
Charles,
Now that the AX-5 has been released, I've been anxiously awaiting reviews. I'd love to know your thoughts on how the AX-5 stacks up sonically against V-1xe & K-1xe stack? I'm considering the possiblity of upgrading at some point if there is a notable sonic benefit. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Steve
There should be a review out in the August issue of Stereophile.
In the meantime, you can read this:

I read the review in Stereophile yesterday and it sounds like it's a real winner. I still ain't giving up my V5xe and K5xe though. I'm too happy with them. It's been a good marriage so far.
Has the latest issue of Stereophile hit the newsstands yet?
I just read the great review of the AX-5 in Stereophile. I would still be interested in opinions from folks who have compared and/or traded up from either the v-5xe & k-5xemp or v-1xe & k-1xe.
Thanks!
Steve
Great idea - I am a big fan of integrated amps - especially ones with minimal compromise.

Dealers don't like it when end users find out about products before they do. Customers come in asking unanswerable questions. No one likes to be in that position.
Are you somehow affiliated with Ayre? How did you get the pictures? Just curious how you managed to get them and why you are 'leaking' them here on AudioAsylum?
Any specs? MSRP? Availability date?
See the link below for a possible source of information on the Ayre AX-5 Integrated amplifier.

I searched the Internet for this amp and the above is what I found.
Specs???
Who needs Specs. when you can have a preamp with Nav. lights! It's clearly a twin but it's going away from you so it shouldn't feel too threatening...
It would be fun to know just what Specs. inmates believe are important in preamps these days. Perhaps their logical role has changed over time and in our era of line-level signals but dirty power and near-field RF they should focus on isolation as much as control.
Regards, Rick
found them on the 'net.
Based on the max power consumption written on the back (600W, twice the AX-7 power), I guess it has about 100W@8Ohm.
nt!!!
They could have put those lights in the centre of the knobs.
Cheers
Bill
Just need the giggles ;-)

Looks cool! Price? Trickle down tech from KX-R or MX-R?
Very Cool, and the best looking and sounding gear on the planet.
Positively pedestrian looking which isnt a bad thing. But I dont know how you can say that it is the best sounding gear on the planet. I know of no one that would call it best and many of these people like Ayre very much. I think it fair to say that it may give you a glimpse of what is possible in the high end.
Ah any more ?
