I am looking for stellar examples of the animal mentioned above. The DAC should be able to do HD audio. Any worthwhile examples ?
Follow Ups:
Don't overlook the Lavry DA-10 AND DA-11 (with remote controlled volume).
Why not a separate DAC and pre-amp? There are dozens of great DACs available and no shortage of hi end pre-amps. It would really expand the possibilities.

Hey Prisoners (A),
I have only one source (digital). May add just one more (analogue) in the future. So I do not need a full function preamp with many facilities.
The bonus is savings in cost.
Any idea how Lavry compares with benchmark (in general) when it comes to quality ?
Makes sense. I'm not familiar with Lavry, sorry.

It sounds fantastic.

Classe CP-800 looks promising.
Thanks for the replies.
Forgot to add, I need analogue inputs in this preamp /dac. I have seen many DACs which are also preamps but cannot accept analogue input. So this should be more of a traditional preamp which has an excellent DAC built into it.

Bel Canto has a couple versions of what you are looking for. If you really have the budget Mark Levinson is coming out with a digital player, not really a preamp but will have the variable output to be used without a preamp.
Van Alstine also has preamp with built in DAC but I'm not sure if he does USB or HD Audio.
My Antelope Zodiac Gold DAC (24/384k via USB) has a great preamp section, so good that I replaced what I was doing with a $20k list Concert Fidelity CF080 preamp with it and barely lost a step (didn't need all the inputs, etc).
I demo'd about 15 DACs over the past 2 years inhouse, and always tried them in direct-to-amp mode (when available). In every example prior to the Antelope the result was pitiful. Either poorly designed analog stages, or poor digital volume controls, or some version of "let's just throw this in there to compete as a preamp". No good. I went into the Antelope demo with the same expectations and was blown away. They use very good stepped relay attenuation, and it shows. Not that this DAC is a full-function preamp; they have only two analog inputs (RCA and TRS), along with the plethora of digital ones.
I am selling one of my Antelope Gold/Voltkius combos (Voltikus is the add-on power supply) but PM me. Not wanting to hijack this thread.
The 6550 is a direct sub for the KT88 in any amp. The 6L6GC/KT66 will sound very good. Better top end, less grunt than the KT88/6550. I used them all in mini-mites: my favorites. I had a custom amp built for just these 2 tubes.

Empirical Audio Overdrive DAC/Pre. I have the latest version with dual Turboclocks and Paul Hynes regulators. It's stunning:

Is any one familiar with the Monarchy D24 Dac -preamp.....in terms of ease of use and sound quality?
I'm hoping to try one of these some time.
You don't list your system. Quality is relative.
