Anyone heard it yet?
It looks very interesting, and I have read very much positive stuff about transformer coupling of different stages.Seems like transformers add some naturalness to the sound,or...?
Audio Note kits is also coming out with a kind of similar preamp with 5687 in the linestage, fed to a step down transformer.
Anyone heard the TRAM and also have heard some Audio Note products?
Follow Ups:
Brian,
any data on gain and noise of this item?
Found it.
12db of gain.
Any measurments of the noise?
Torfinn
We're getting about 0.2mv with the prebuilt units we're selling. You're right to be concerned about noise on W.O.T.linestage as there is the potential for more noise coupling throught he chassis and OPT/PTX. But the layout we've arrived at is very quiet.

...just measured a pair of built-up Trams and they are at about 0.1mv.

Folks,To put this into context, 0.1mV is -80dbV, unweighted. Many of the Tube preamps measured by Stereophile do worse.
With some A weighting I suspect that the noise will drop to < -90dbV.
Brian, did you manage that with AC heaters or did you end up using DC Heaters?
Thorsten:
Done with AC heaters. We did have to tie the filament wires in a separate bundle from the other AC wires.BTW, the 6N12P is very much worthwhile and easy. Easy is good.
This is built with the 6N12 - octal almost-equivalent to the 5687, so only the pinout needs to be changed. The 6N12 is another of the fast-disappearing treasures from the Chinese military. Internal structure is really robust with bowed black plates.
Sounds: just fired up, but I like it.
Any chance of having a remote on the volume of the TRAM (and still use the PEC pot)?Since my Joplin has been away for "holiday" for a month I have been used to remote again (with another amp) and it is really not so easy going back again.....
Btw. Another solution could be moving the turntable, riaa and linestage, but then I would need loooong interconnects (about 10m).
What interconnects do you recommend for such distances Brian?
Torfinn
Remote, maybe at some future time. No chance with the PEC though.
No idea what IC are best for longish lengths. The longest I use are 2m and the Gotham GAC is great.
Maybe some other long-ic-users could contribute something here.
At the RMAF Bill Allen used long Bastani IC and they seem to work OK.
Exactly what I want in an active preamp.Rock Solid tube regulated power supply.
Good sounding tubes (5687 might be the BEST sounding 9 pin tube one could choose for a line stage)
Transformer output. Capable of driving long inter-connects.
Headphone output is a BONUS
