If you have a removable head shell get an inexpensive stereo cartridge and wire it up for mono and switch cartridges or get a mono cartridge.
Turn down the treble. I forget the high frequency rolloff on the old records but if you turn down the treble you eliminate the hiss without changing the recorded high frequencies.
