Cones...

The post below about comparing Maggies to "high end" box speakers got me wondering. I know a fair amount about sound, but I can't help but think (with no data--just a hunch) that having round or oval cones (of different sizes) go back and forth is an odd, or antiquated way of producing sound. And yet, other than planars and horns, there really don't seem to be too many options. What do the rest of you think about this?
