Soundcraftsmen 2640TX - pics

Posted by zobsky on November 11, 2007 at 18:07:55:

I've decided to post some pics and info on these drivers, and also some info on their T/S parameters, impedance sweeps. My audigy 2 doesn't want to co-operate at the moment so I've used the crappy onboard sound card. DO NOT take these values as kosher (the frequency scale seems to be off by 5 - 10 Hz), but at least we can get an approximate idea of where things stand.

4. Impedance sweep with my junky onboard realtek sound card:
The frequency axis is off by 5 - 10 Hz (verified by testing a few other drivers that I've previously tested with my better sound card and verified via spec sheet)

Fs should actually be somewhere between 25 and 30Hz, (and I'm not too sure about the impedance characteristic below (to the left of) Fs, but at least it gives us an idea of general trends.

T/S parameters (also inaccurate for reasons given above)
Fs = 31.67 Hz >>>>>> should be a bit lower
Re = 5.00 ohms[dc]
Le = 2857.96 uH
L2 = 855.60 uH
R2 = 12.58 ohms
Qt = 0.62 >>>>>>>> should be a bit lower (I'd estimate around 0.4 - 0.5 or so)
Qes = 0.66
Qms = 9.33

Nudie shot: lot of air in there !! No macho magnets to be found :( The crossover is a single 2uF / 50V capacitor !!! (I should probably change this)

The horn has a patent number on it (2690231), .. seems to be an Abe Cohen device.

How does it sound?
Not bad. Comparing the driver on the floor (I know, unfair comparison) to a fostex FE 166E (about 94 - 95 dB efficient) in a back loaded horn, ..the soundcraftsmen seems just a bit less efficient and a bit more grainy sounding (I bet the old cap. doesn't help either). But overall, it isn't bad sounding at all.

Hope this post was informative. I'll try to get some better T/S / impedance / response graphs after I get the audigy working.

Any suggestions on how to get the best out of these drivers?

Thanks
