Say Apple is spending X-amount of dollars for this case. If adding the same amount to their R&D for future products could leap-frog them ahead of the current i-product theme why not do it? This case could drag out for a long time and end up costing 10's if not 100's of millions, with the end result being what actually? Perhaps a slight change in Samsung's products to move it away from the iProduct, perhaps a fine for Samsung or both. Either way its not likely to make a big dent in Samsungs total budget or overall product line.
From a consumers stand point this is all advertising for Samsung. People who previously never noticed or even looked at Samsungs product might now take a closer look and see just how similar it is to Apple in looks and function and is actually better than Apple in terms of upgradablity. You can upgrade a Android OS but you are stuck with iProducts.
Fact is, everyone likes an underdog. And everyone looks to see the big dominant corporation take a hit. Many people don't like Apple and Microsoft for that matter simply because of their dominance and size. And with Apple, its heavy handed and close-ended approach to its product.
