I use a Blue Circle SBH headphone amp with HD650s and love it. A few years ago I also had a Stax headamp and after a long period of comparison decided I preferred the sound of the Sennheisers with a good amp (at the time I had a Grace 901 headamp - the Blue Circle is far better). The Stax headphones had a metallic tinge to them that I could not get over. But they did sound good, perhaps the most detailed of all of my headphone amps. Someday I may try them again. BTW I've never liked the Headroom amps.

BTW what is your source for the headphone system? Headphone? If it's your CD player, headphones can be very revealing and it may be your source that is disappointing you.
