I have two turntables, a Roksan Xerexes with the RB-900 arm and the Rega 25 with RB-600 arm, -I fell your pain!
You should tell us what cart. you are using, many will not work without spacers. The Roksan has the Rega Exact cart. -no problem. The Rega 25 has the Clearaudio Aurum-beta S mm. cart. -there was a problem. This was solved by adjusting the tonearm rest as you had indicated trying.
You are also right in that the lifting motion is not very much, which creates a problem with all but Rega carts.
I also auditioned the RB 300 on a Pink Triangle Torentulla. I found that the RB-300 was not smooth and easy in the raising and lowering process. I was trying to use my Shure V15xMR cart. on it, -it was a disaster, it did not work, the underside of the cart. scraped the record while playing, and in the raising a lowering process, the sylis would skip across the record. I ended up braking the stylis, that's why I didn't buy the Pink Triangle, and ended up with a used Roksan with RB-900 arm/Exact cart.
