Shirley? Grab everything you can get your mitts on! He style is the antithesis of bombast but he is one of the true innovators on the piano. His trio recordings that mate his songful piano playing with the sonorities of cello and bass strings are the "creme de la creme", IMO. I own these records not mentioned so far, and I recommend that you look for them too: 'Don Shirley plays Shirley', Cadence CLP 3037. 'The Gospel Acoording to Don Shirley', Columbia CS 9723. 'The Don Shirley Point Of View', Atlantic SD 1605. I wish that I had as many Shirley LPs as Muzikmike. I am not that lucky, but luckily, I am not too picky about format. In addition to my LP finds, I have some of those bargain Shirley CD sets available on the Collectibles label. Get to know Shirley, he's like a sleeping giant.
