RE: First fruits of HRT Line Streamer

Glad to hear that you're getting pleasing results with your HRT device. Which country was your 12" pressed in? I found the same as you in terms of "impact" and SLAM. As a collector myself with loads of 12"s from that era, I find there are differences even between different countries for the same mix. Mixes that are included on an LP compilation will sound different again. As I'm sure you're already familiar with this, but for anyone else....the vinyl cuts are specifically mastered for the intended playback equipment and environment and the maxi-singles are specifically mastered for maximum impact in a club so you shouldn't expect the CD version to sound like a 45rpm 12" single. The EQ is also very different. For a club situation, the 12" is cut hot, so the HF content will have to be decreased otherwise the DJ cartridges (which generally have a conical tip given the high VTF normally employed) wouldn't be able to track the high velocities. Also, the DJ cartridges have limited bandwidth anyway, plus loud HF content hurts the ears!
From my own recordings, properly dithered down-conversions (Red book) of high resolution recordings would have the same SLAM that you observed - it's not a CD issue specifically but a mastering issue. These days, a (pop music) CD to me is not worth buying as it is compressed to oblivion.
