Vinyl Asylum Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ. |

Although it will still be down the road a bit, I want to be ready for the time when downsizing might mean retiring my vinyl collection and turntables. Also its nice to be able to play content unique to vinyl on my other systems.
Note: got an email from one inmate who said his unit was near DOA. So far, mine is working just fine. Buyer beware?
I've digitized vinyl in the past but it was awkward because I had to temporarily move a turntable and preamp to the office where the onboard sound card ADC lived. Now, I'm using a Win10 laptop running Audacity connected to the main system via the Line Streamer using USB captured in 24/96. Easy peasy now using the main system. I'm still learning Audacity and may need to reduce the default recording level.
First rips were a collection of 80s era Madonna 45 RPM "maxi singles". Say what you will of the artist, but these are some of the most dynamic and punchy recordings I've got. You want SLAMM? They've got it! All of them are in pristine condition with run length no more than about six minutes - so you can literally count the grooves. Gave each a cleaning via the HW-16 and a fresh stylus brushing.
Sidebar: we always hear how CD content can have so much more dynamic range than vinyl. Perhaps on a theoretical basis, but not always in the real world. Here are some visual comparisons of the 45 rips vs CD content. The maxi singles typically are extended versions as well.
Can you tell the difference? ;)
