RE: Turntables for 12 inch tonearms

Thanks for the additional information. Our tastes seem very similar which I had hoped would help.

Unfortunately the budget does provide a barrier.

Most of the turntables that can carry a 12" arm are at the upper end of their manufacturer's range. This is partly because of the cost of providing the larger plinth required. For example look at the scale of the price differential between the SME 20/3 and 20/12 turntable/arm combinations which is caused almost solely by the additional size ( plinth and arm) for two players otherwise more or less identical.

One approach would be to buy motor only turntable ( perhaps one of the used classics) and build a plinth/armboard as required to take the 12" arm. However this enters the DIY field so this is also ruled out. You could have the plinth custom made by a specialist craftsman but the additional cost of this may also take you beyond the budget.

I had one idea; A Feickert Woodpecker. However I was working from my local prices here in the UK. It is around 3,000 GBP including 20% VAT. Take off the tax, convert to USD and hey presto. But, no, your US importer prices it at $6500 (no arm), $8000 with 12" JJelco..

One other idea is a Michell Orbe SE ( my own turntable) or its cheaper sister the Gyrodek SE. Again around 2.5-3000 GBP for the Orbe or 1500 - 2000 GBP for the Gyrodek. However USA prices are unknown to me. I have an Orbe SE and know that musically it should fit your wants exactly. Michell turntables are normally only suitable for 9" arms. However they will machine a special armboard outrigger for 12" arms if asked (specify arm). HiFI World had them make one for a 12" Jelco review a few years back. NB: I would strongly suggest that you PM me if you want to follow up on this idea.
