RE: Tube phono pre-amp questions

Good news and bad.

The good - it looks like it uses 12AX7s. There's a shed-load of very good 12AX7 types in current manufacture. Ask over on tubes and you'll get more recco's than you can count. I am particularly fond of the JJ ECC803s. It's a premium version of the 12AX7. I am also a fan of the JJ 5751, another variant of the 12AX7. Many folks think, myself included, 5751 sounds better, but it has less gain than the 12AX7 and may not be a good choice for a phono pre. Check the manual and see what the manufacturer has to say about usung 5751. Whatever you do, be sure to pay for tubes tested and screened for lowest possible noise.

The bad - tubes can be an addiction. Like Pokemon; gotta hear 'em all. Soon you'll be spending your lunch money on preamp tubes. Then it's on to the hard stuff ... tubed monoblocks and kinkless tetrodes. Been the ruin of many a good man.

Enjoy your new phono. I think you made a good move.
