I've looked into those before, and they usually seem to be intended for measuring higher speeds, like for example hundreds or thousands of RPM, and offer insufficient precision at low speeds.

The setup I cobbled together from junk laying around seems to be working well, at this point it's just a matter of machining the shaft down. One thing I like about the strobe disc is it's possible to see wow and flutter, and it's very easy to use. I just never have attempted to use it for a speed other than which it was designed before now.
