2 recent Bach Goldberg Variations vinyl: Sony vs. Erato productions...

Remastered from the original analogue tape with the same reissue engineer who worked on A State of Wonder back in 2002. This is a quiet and flat record. Warmer tonal balance than the original digital vinyl and the opening note emerges from a blacker background. Astonishing amount of low level details and dynamics leaving the digital original pressing completely dead. Much more immediate.
30$ for this LP is a huge bargain. if you like Gould's '81 performance, go get this before it becomes OOP. I have not heard such a nice classical reissue like this ever. And this is indeed the best sounding ever been issued.

Coming off from the all analogue Gould set above, this is a dirty gray pressing with a tell tale digital recessed midrange. Noisy vinyl in spite it's been pressed at the same plant. Tone of piano now sounds a bit fake and upper register has a hollow ringing sound. Slightly off center hole makes the pitch unstable. Distant perspective with a lot less involvement factor. Some notes sound too vague losing a clarity. There is a pice of dirt stuck on inner which punctured through to the vinyl landing on the ending Aria almost impossible to listen to with a popping sound for a couple rotations. It was returned to the supplier and the replacement, whilst it's flat and no apparent surface damage, the record still has an off centre hole and noisy. Both records had significant amount of surface scratches whilst Sony Gould reissue had none. Performance is great but its vinyl production is sub standard.

They are pressed at the same MPO France. How could the quality of pressing vary this much? Is this a matter of Sony has more pull or did they pay extra over Erato/Warner? Granted the Sony reissue is 30 and Erato is 22. I wonder if the MPO has a different pricing ladder.

You could say you get what you paid for, but I have had a pretty good luck with other 20$ classical vinyl issues such as this Guarneri String Quartets pressing from a few years back. Quiet and excellent production value.
