R.I.P. Phil Woods

Over on Music Lane there's a discussion about the passing yesterday of the sublime alto player Phil Woods, but I want to call it to the attention of the music lovers here on VA. He was a tremendous talent with a wonderful tone and and a brilliant ear for phrasing who graciously bridged between "cerebral" jazz and more popular, mainstream music. For those who are not familiar, he worked with Monk, Diz and Oliver Nelson, and led his own influential ensemble including Tom Harrell and Bill Charlap. He did sessions work with Billy Joel, Paul Simon, and Aretha Franklin among others. His brief solo on Steely Dan's "Dr Wu" is an elegant, poignant commentary that Fagen and Becker have acknowledged as a touchstone for the directional shift that led to "Aja". He was a sincere, talented, opinionated man, and I feel fortunate to have known him.

. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
