If you are not a fan of WTF, you will really dislike it this week. This week's selection of free turntables is between a belt drive (edit: idler drive) and a direct drive ...and they are both changers ...the venerable Dual 1229 and the not often mentioned Technics SL-1350.
Dual 1229
Technics SL-1350
I've never owned either of these, but have spent some time with the 1229 using it as a single-play table and not a changer. Its impressive ...built like a brick out house and I find it rather handsome. The reason I have had exposure to the 1229 is because the shops I've worked in all had service departments ...with 1229s on the shelves. That's a bit worrisome. When it comes to things mechanically complex I personally prefer Japanese to German. That gives the Technics an edge, for me. The Technics ...well, it has that Technics thing going on with the styling, which I am a fan of ...and I'd imagine it sounds pretty good.
I find this one of the toughest WTF's yet. Its pretty much a coin toss because I've never had a Dual and the 1229 (so I'm told) is a good one. Even though I've never heard an SL-1350, I'm guessing its not significantly different than other Technics tables of the day, except it can be used as a changer. I had an SL-1800 that I liked okay. I doubt the SL-1350 is at all like the SL-1200, but guessing it would be somewhat similar to an SL-1800.
So, I'll take the Technics.
How about you? Which will you take ...and why?
Have a good weekend everyone.
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
