Prague

I was in Prague a few weeks back. Wonderful city! Unfortunately I was there at a time when none of the major musical organizations were playing, so I plan to go back when they are!

Musically, I did visit two record stores and found a number of Lps, new and used (pristine, though) of mostly Czech music being played by Czech musicians on Supraphon. Also picked up a few others, mostly Beethoven.

I visited both the Smetana and Dvorak museums. The Dvorak museum is a bit of an enigma - located in a house not associated with Dvorak during his lifetime, and not that much to see - his viola and piano. The Smetana museum is much better, although still not a five star attraction, and located right by the Moldau - which is appropriate, right? Pictures of the museum and the view on the patio next to the museum are attached.
(That's the Charles Bridge over the Moldau (Vltava) with Prague Castle in the distance.)

I also visited the graves of Smetana, Dvorak, Jan and Rafael Kubelik and Karel Ancerl, all of which are in the graveyard in Vysehrad Castle. By the way, the opening bars of Smetana's Vysehrad are used at the train station before announcements.....

I have the feeling that while Dvorak is hugely loved and respected, the real national composer is Smetana. Janacek doesn't get that kind of love - he was from Brno, not Prague.

The best beer in the Czech Republic can be found at a pub in Pilsen, where they serve unfiltered Pilsener Urquell. Worth a trip in itself.
