Turntables at CES

Contrary to rumors, vinyl hasn't died yet and was evident in many a room at CES. Here's a run down of what we found.

Avid might be a new comer here, but has been selling tables in the UK since 1995. The Acutus ($10K) was found in the Rogue room and delivered the goods.

Conrad Mas of Avid with a partially disassembled Volvere.

Avid's Volvere ($4K).

The entire Basis lineup was on display, starting with the 1400.

Products are upgradeable via an exchange program. Here's the Basis 2001 which adds suspension and an improved platter and bearing to the 1400.

Moving up and adding the Debut platter and a 2" sub-chassis is the Basis 2400 ($4,500) equipped with the new Basis Vector unipivot arm ($2,495).

The Basis 2500 ($5,500) then adds suspension to the 2400.

Finally, the top of the line Debut ($8,400 or $10,600 with vacuum clamping system) sounded great even being suspended over two racks and being subjected to AJ's fist pounding.

Basis' AJ Conti, hands down winner of the first Annual Asylum Yoyo Masters.

Blue Note had an extensive lineup of tables that were also reasonably priced. Here's the Bellosguardo, $1,385

Moving up the line is the Blue Note Belvedere ($2,495)

And back down, the entry level, Blue Note Deck 12 ($735).

This fine German table from Brinkman was found in the Amphion room which was one of the finest sounding rooms at Alexis Park.

Functional art, the Cardas Table.

Clear Audio was also found in force in the Musical Surroundings room. Here's a shot of their Champion Line. Personally, I found the multiple lines and literally the dozen or more tables to be confusing, but Norb Schmied (rpeviously with Audio Review and now Musical Surroundings) was patient with us in explaining the advantages and the upgradability within the various product offerings.

The Clear Audio line then moves up to the Solution series.

Here is the Clear Audio Maximum Solution.

And finally, we hit the Clear Audio Reference.....

....which is capped off by the Clear Audio Master Reference.

None of these tables were playing at the time though they might have had one in another room that I didn't discover.

A classic Garrard 501 found in Kondo's room and used to excellent effect. Kondo was a definate must listen room, but one that once there, you wouldn't want to leave.

Here's another vintage Garrard found in Lamm's room at Alexis Park.

No table would be complete without an arm. Here's the latest Graham 2.2 and their Robin.

A new comer, Progressive Engineering's table was shown in the Atma-sphere room, but Mike didn't seem to have much luck at getting Ralph to abandon his trusty old one. I heard this table extensively at VSAC and it is a contender.

A Rega P9.

Red Rock was using a Teres Project table with Graham arm. I love the looks and combined with Red Rock electronics and Merlin speakers, it delivered the goods in spades, definately one of the best sounds at the show using real world priced gear.

Merlin's Bobby Palkovic brought his personal VPI TNT outfitted with a JMW arm.

Finally, Italian style, the Vyger Indian ($10K).

Here's the Vyger Atlantis, priced with arm at $27K. Well, functional art ain't cheap.

The Vyger Signature.

And finally, the Walker Proscenium Gold Signature found in the Essence room. If you missed Essence at the Tuscany, it was terrific and the Walker surely didn't let them down.
