Using the DCR of the coil is an old trick that many commercial speaker designers use, and will not cause any problems or performance penalties. As a matter of fact, a coil made from the smaller gauge wire will not have any linearity penalty compared to a 14 gauge based coil.

The only downside is that you must be sure of the value, once it is built in to the coil, you can not reduce it without replacing the coil. FOr comercial systems that have been designed to death, this is usually not a problem.

One thing, if you need a small amount of pad like 1 ohms or so, it can be used without the nominal shunt R for a real L-pad, especially if it is placed BEFORE the network components, on the input side. This maintains look back impedance for any filter order above the 1st. A 1st order filter will show no difference, and a samll value like one ohm or so will still be OK.
