Re: Problem with old Yamaha receiver

204.94.81.82

Let's hope something is not really loose. More likely something dropped in if something is rattling around which might have shorted something else. Things rarely shake loose so there a few other things that might be the problem.

First is a bad interconnect, try changing the R&L to see if the problem moves or goes away. If so it's a short which is common with molded cables. Also, does the radio work or do the same thing? Also points to an interconnect. Also swap speaker cables to be sure the problem move to the other speaker to eliminate the speaker as the problem.

Second, do you have pets? My dog chewed and shorted a speaker wire once which took out the right channel on my amp. So, all the cables look good?

Third, the outputs got shorted and it took something out. Shop time.

Fourth, if it hasn't been used for a long time, it's possible the capacitors are about shot or dying. Those are the big round things. With the top off you could tap on them with the handle of a screw driver to see if anything happens. Don't touch the leads on them, they store BIG voltage.

I have an old receiver that does that if it's been off, marginal caps. I found leaving it on all the time solved the problem and it's not worth replacing them to me right now as it sits in the garage. If I leave it on a day or so without playing it, it'll work fine. Turn it off and it'll cut out intermittantly in one channel until the next day.

Last thing is did you drop it? If so, it could have broken or cracked the pot on the balance control, again shop time.

Good luck!
