Lukasz,I am sorry to hear of your friends problems. The DIY bass traps have been successfully built by many with great success. The newest Super Quick & Dirty version has been wildly popular, and I get a lot of e-mail about that one.
Note that just 2 bass traps will not work miracles, i believe that ASC recommends using at least 8 to start with as a minimum. My version is at elast as effective, and many have found that 4 traps are enough to get results. Lower frequency modes require more traps to work well.
Common Problems In DIY Bass Trap Construction:
The most common problem with the orginal recipe DIY bass traps are air leaks. If the fiberglass is not compressed into a shell with no leaks at the seams, top or bottom, then the trap will lose effectiveness. The second most common problem is using material of the wrong density or thickness, or both. For the 4" differential, the thickness of typical building insulation fiberglass used should be 6 to 6 1/2".
If other materials are used, they must correspond to the proper density, and be compressed accordingly. The density of typical building fiberglass is approx. 1/2 lb. per cubic foot. When compressed the proper amount, the density is going to be approx. 1.5 lbs. per cu. ft.
The third most common problem is not bracing the inside with a center disc, which allows the inner wall of animal fencing to partially collapse and the proper density of the fiberglass is not acheived. Taller than 3 foot cylinders also need more than one center support disc. Tied in with this type of problem is not cinching the outer layer tightly enough in the middle, so as to assure a good compression of the fiberglass.
All these things have been noted in the original DIY note, or in subsequent posts here at AA.
