My Jon Risch DIY experience

To date I've made 5 of his absorber panels. They replaced carpet I was previously using. On a scale of 1-10 for effectiveness, 1 being an un-treated wall and 10 being the vacuum of outerspace (total absorption), I'd put carpet at a 2 and the panels at an 8.

I've found carpet is better than egg crate foam, Pillows are better than carpet, and all of them pale in comparison to the Risch DIY panels. In order of least to most effective:

Bare wall
Egg crate foam
Carpet
Couch Pillows (may depend on covering material)
Then a big gap
Risch panels
Vacuum of space

Build time was remarkably short. I knocked two of them together just last night in a grand total of an hour for both (half an hour each). And they look nice.

If you absolutely don't want to make something then I'd recommend using a nice thick layer of poly-fiber batting. Just buy a bag of the stuff at wal-mart and staple it to your wall (perhaps multiple layers thick). It should work a lot better than carpet, foam, etc.

BTW, I built my panels out of 9" thick fiberglass insulation, placed 4" from the wall. I made three double wide (two insulation roll thicknesses) and two single wide and all are five feet tall. Its a TON of absorption. Next up: tube traps...
