5963 is a computer grade 12AU7 type tube - mu around 20
5965 is a computer grade 12AV7 type tube - mu around 48
Both use a large cathode, intended to increase their lifetime in vacuuum tube computers. We have found this large cathode can give an increased sense of bass control and dymnamics.

We have used the 5965 in a parafeed preamp, and the 5963 is a nice addition to our Foreplay preamp - but they are not interchangable without some rework of the op points. Also note that the 5965 draws more heater current than the 12AU7 - 450 mA.

Another tube that has a large cathode and sounds very nice is the Svetlana 6N1P. Great bass and dynamics, very smooth top end, none of the typical 8kHz ringing and microphony common to the 6922 6DJ8 7038 types.
