Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
I've been streaming Jazzradio.com a lot lately thru the Eico HF-87 hooked to the NewForm research 645 ribbons.I'm going directly into the amp out of my I-Pad into my DAC and it's the first time in years I've enjoyed using EL34s.
What really helps I think is the Mullard 12AX7 10M on the input along with not using a preamp.I have had the Telefunken five staple single hole EL34s and they were very nice with this setup and nicely involving.
I then put the old faithful EH 6CA7s back in and I also had that same involving sound only with more room presence on the top and a bit more bass on the bottom.
It seems with the EL34 type tubes,so much of the actual performance depends on the perfection of the voltage amp and the driver stage where in this case I'm using TungSol 6SN7 round plates for the driver. The more linear and the lower the distortion in the early always plays wells for the EL34s.
