Glue,

this is a very difficult question to answer! The main reason being that
the Apogee line had a BROAD range in sounds between the various models
(that became even broader with different amplifiers.) I heard the
Diva with quite a few setups (Krell KRS, Krell KMA-200, Sumo, and even
the Adcom 555) and it always sounded magnificent with a very unstrained
musical presentation. I heard the Scintilla with Krell and Adcom amps
and it always impressed me with its powerful bass and midrange detail.
I probably heard members of the Duetta series under the most conditions
with Krell, Adcom, Sumo, Classe, Counterpoint, and Pass Labs amplifiers and they always struck me as too laid back and dull. I only heard the
Stage briefly with a McCormack DNA amp, but it brought back memmories of
the Diva and Scintilla with more upper bass punch but less lower bass. The
Caliper (which I only heard for short periods with Krell amps) was similar
to the Duetta. I never heard the Slant/Centaurus/Cepheus range long enough
to feel comfortable with any kind of comment on their sound.

With Magnepans, I have owned the SMG (which is GREAT for small accoustic
pieces and doesn't do that bad with Pink Floyd either :)) and heard
the SMGc, 1.5, IIIA, 3.3R, 3.5, and most recently the 1.6qr. The Maggies
have more of a "house sound" than the Apogees do. All of them are very
musical and quite enjoyable (thinking back, I heard the MG-20 for a fairly
extended period and it sounded terrible, but I attributed the sound to the
Mark Levinson reference amps/preamp and CD...the system was BRIGHT!!).
The newer Magnepans with the quasi ribbon have a much better treble than
the older units with the fine aluminum wire tweeters and the models with the true ribbon are better still. Was not impressed with the 1.6 but I
believe the dealer simply had them poorly set up.

Apogees may be tough to audition these days, but Magnepans should be quite
available....take the time to hear them!
