what a good question! i have no earthy idea as to the answer. i've always assumed that it meant the rear of the speaker (providing it was rear ported). now i feel like a total novice.
i wish that some of the lurkers (speaker manufacturer technical types) on this site would give us a real answer, not the boom box pundits!
