Let me explain. I have an upstairs system, primarily for streaming and HT. Currently it's pretty cobbled together. Decent Klipsch bookshelves sitting on the fireplace, crappy Sony center and sub.
My plans are to get a new generation AVR and set up a 5.1 system. I have two plans I'm considering, and would like some thoughts. Surrounds are going in the ceiling and they will be some Boston Acoustics we have, NIB. The surrounds won't change in either plan.
Plan 1: Keep the Klipsch for the LR speakers, add a Klipsch center and sub. Positives of this plan. The Klipsch are a very dynamic speaker, also a known quantity. They certainly don't lack for volume for movie explosions and such. They are also reasonably musical, especially when we're mostly using them hanging out, listening from across the room. Not sweet spot, critical type listening.
Minuses to this approach. The mains are low, a good bit lower than ear level. They are also pretty close together. They can't really move, as we will not be putting speakers up on stands. The speakers are about five feet apart and we sit close to ten feet back.
Plan 2: Pick up the Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelves, center and sub from Best Buy for dirt cheap. Put the bookshelves ON the bookshelf. They would go on their sides. This would allow me to get the tweeters up to ear height, and also get the speakers spread more like 7 or 8 feet apart, much better for the listening position, theoretically. If I put them on the bookshelf I would get soft stuff around them to minimize interactions with the shelf.
Pluses to this plan. Theoretically a better soundstage, if I can get the bookshelf placement to work. The Andrew Jones speakers might just be more musical than the Klipsch.
Minuses: will the bookshelf placement really work? Also, will I get the dynamics for movies?
What are your thoughts about these two options?
