Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Nola Boxers

I noticed there is not much on the Nola Boxers in the asylum so I thought I would give a quick mini-review. I've been looking for small/bookshelf speakers to go with my computer. I've been running a Nuforce Icon, S-1 speakers and W-1 subwoofer there but decided to upgrade when thinking about how much more time I spend listening to that set up versus anything else in the house.

My first step was to get a nice DAC with a headphone amp built in for late night listening--mission accomplished with a Bel Canto 1.5 (which I really like btw). I've been toying with the idea of getting a bigger T-amp (something like a Virtue) and getting better speakers--the options on speakers seemed to be the Era D4 or D5s (which I had heard), the Silverline Minuets (which I had not)--I was looking for something I wouldn't feel too guilty about using on a desktop and that sounded good nearfield but also would play into the room better than the Nuforce set up. I read some positive buzz about the Boxer and found there was a (relativly) local place that carried them, so I decided to go listen.

I just took in the CDs in my car, so no great audiophile picks and was immediately impressed that the salesman hooked the Boxers up to some pretty basic (and reasonable) Jolida equipment, rather than the megabucks stuff on the next stand. In short, the Nola Boxer knocked my socks off! They throw a really wide and reasonably detailed sound stage, have a lot more "weight" than I thought standmounts in that class might have and were the most engaging speaker that I've ever auditioned--right off the bat.

I would put on a CD, choose a song and rather than swap out to go to the next thing I wanted to try after it was over, would get sucked into listening to multiple tracks. This happened on every CD I listened to! I listen to mostly rock, alt country and jazz--and many recordings are just not that good. So it's important that speakers sound good with a wider variety of material--the Boxers sounded good on everything! Anyway, less than two hours later I bought them--it's the surest decision I've ever made in audio.

I got them home, hooked them up to my computer (a mac mini running iTunes and Pure Music 1.8), borowed my little Systhesis Ensemble from the bedroom system and was blown away. They are currently sitting on a couple of computer tables, not on stands and are probably too close to the back wall but they still sound amazing. I was whipping through my music the last couple of nights and it all sounds engaging--same deal as the store, started to listen to one song and ended up listening to muliple tracks each time. From Alison Krauss and John Coltrane to Black Sabbath and The Jam it all sounded excellent and allowed me to really connect with the music in way that I'm not sure I've done in a while.

I have owned Linn, Dynaudio and Usher and currently own Merlin, Audio Note and Dali and have heard countless others--and the Nola Boxers are a hell of a lot more fun than any of those! Now I need to find the right amp for them (or find a new amp for the Audio Notes, the Ensemble is pretty damned good with them). Highly recommended!
