Ozzy Osbourne, "Time After Time"

1991 meant death metal, grunge, and rap. Left for dead, Ozzy Osbourne, during the Fall '91 quarter, released the surprisingly clean- and focused-sounding (courtesy of producers Duane Baron and John Purdell) No More Tears. Co-written with Motorhead's Lemmy, "Mama, I'm Coming Home" seemed to indicate the Prince Of Darkness was retiring. Well, 25 years later, he's still active.

When we returned to school for the Winter '92 quarter, I made my way across the parking lot to UC Santa Cruz's on-campus radio station, KZSC. In their blow-out bin, I found a promo CD single of Ozzy's "Time After Time." When I brought it back to my college apartment, my housemate Doug mistakenly thought it was a Cyndi Lauper cover.

In the summer of '92, my on-again/off-again girlfriend, KJ, went to the San Francisco Winterland warehouse, then located at the end of Spear Street, near the foot of the Bay Bridge. Among other paraphernalia, she picked up a black Ozzy Osbourne "No More Tours" t-shirt.

That summer, several of our friends had No More Tears on CD. Though "Mama, I'm Coming Home" was the hit, "Time After Time" was a favorite of ours. It was good to chill to "Time After Time," when stopping one sport, and picking up the next. I still recall the one afternoon, when we ordered pizza, and had it delivered to Rossi Playground. The poor delivery guy was fearful that this was some kind of joke, so he was relieved, when Patricia flagged him down, and we all chipped in to pay for the pizzas.

Around 2000, I lent the promo CD single to an audiophile. I never did get it back. But anyway, as a DJ, or as an individual listener, you don't want to be the SA who plays the same thing over and over again. So you dig into the "alternate cuts," and play the less-traveled tracks like Ozzy's "Time After Time."
