Saraya, "When You See Me Again"

For over a quarter century, when the media come out with their Best Female Rock Vocalists lists, they keep omitting, ignoring, or overlooking Sandi Saraya. She's had this dedicated following, who, in the media's absence or ignorance, keeping carrying the torch.

Since Saraya the band came from New Jersey, and were signed to Polydor/Polygram, they were billed as a sister act to Bon Jovi. But due to Sandi's heartfelt vocals, they were much more than that.

Producer Peter Collins had worked with Queensryche, on Operation: Mindcrime and Empire. Few vocalists were as expressive as Queensryche's Geoff Tate, and Collins segued nicely, by bringing out Sandi Saraya's soaring yet passionate reach, on When The Blackbird Sings, which came out during the Spring 1991 quarter. So if Saraya sounded more like Queensryche, now you know why.

But you had to be careful. If you were in a bad relationship, or going through a breakup, Saraya's torch songs would wring your heart, and pull it apart. Nevertheless, fans recognized Sandi as one of rock's best, albeit under-the-radar, female vocalists. And then, in the July 1992 issue of Stereophile, a shout-out to Saraya immortalized them, amongst us audiophiles.

When I wrote the introductory paragraph above, I had to do a double-take. It doesn't seem like it's been 25 years, that our hearts have been burning to When The Blackbird Sings. Here's one of its faves, "When You See Me Again."
