Tesla, "Call It What You Want"

We seriously need to start a blog or record of obscure pop music songs heard at restaurants, retail stores, and other commercial venues. We have been hearing a greater variety of music at these places. It's usually because of the internet streaming or satellite radio stations used by these restaurants and stores. Needless to say, they are putting audio stores ad shows to shame.

Just today, while standing in line at Safeway, I and several others were stunned, to hear Tesla's "Call It What You Want." I mean, you just do not ear that song anywhere.

But first, some history. The band Tesla hailed from Sacramento, some 80 miles from the San Francisco Bay Area. Because of their namesake, they were always popular amongst us audiophiles. Well, a quarter century ago, in the Fall 1991 semester, Tesla really won over the audiophiles, with "Edison's Medicine."

Alas, this was smack dab in the middle of the grunge revolution. Reading the leaves, Geffen Records, in order to differentiate Tesla from grunge and glam metal, marketed Psychotic Supper as "no-bullshit rock & roll."

Also, this was the time that the Tesla vacuum tube factor in the former Yugoslavia got damaged. Since US-production of tubes had pretty much ceased by 1991, audiophiles and musicians were alarmed, that Yugo tube production ground to a halt. That left pretty much only Russia and China as major vacuum tube manufacturing countries.

But back to the music. Enough of pitting one type of music against another. We should take a cue from "Call It What You Want," and like ALL forms of rock.

Yes, we are rightfully mad, that audio stores and radio stations do not play "Call It What You Want." Do we really have to rely on Safeway to hear it?
