Every now and then, a pop music artist surprises us, by broaching serious subjects. Such was the case in 1989, when Aerosmith came out with "Janie's Got A Gun." The next year, glam metal outfit Warrant surprised us, with "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Trying to follow in those footsteps, lite rock and adult contemporary artist Richard Marx, towards the end of 1991, sang "Hazard."
Ah, but what bad or unfortunate timing. You see, when the Fall '91 semester started, the grunge revolution had begun, thus wiping out all genres of music, except for rap. Marx's "Hazard," about a Mary suspiciously disappearing or dying in a Nebraska town, never saw the light of day.
Okay, so if Marx had any fans in Nebraska, he lost them. Still, "Hazard" was arguably his most serious song, and it just didn't get any attention, airplay, or publicity. So that left it up to us audiophiles, to pick up the pieces....and to hypothesize about who or what killed Mary.
