Rick Astley, "Cry For Help"

I've already blogged about Rick Astley's "Cry For Help," so I'm not going to repeat those things. But I would like to add that, when it came out during the Winter 1991 quarter, I was in a tiny dorm room, with a Sony Discman and the AR Powered Partners.

On one side of my dorm room, my neighbor was Gorilla Troy, who, when he was in, blasted awful rap music. On the opposite side was a triple room, housing three girls: Lumberjack Girl, Haley, and Andrea. LG and Haley each had her own boyfriend, so they often sexiled Andrea, the petite curly blonde. Andrea would occasionally ask to crash in my room. She and I would listen to CDs via the Sony/AR.

But one night, the little 13" TV was on VH1. When Astley's "Cry For Help" came on, Andrea remarked, "Wow, his hair is longer than mine!" She also pointed out that Astley semeed to be making the career move of leaving dance music, and going into adult contemporary blue-eyed soul.

There's a parallel here. At the same time Astley wanted to leave dance, and get into AC, many audiophiles wanted to leave mid-fi, and get into high-end audio. When I hear "Cry For Help" reproduced accurately, I see both Andrea's blonde hair (it was the same shade all over her body) and the champagne-gold finish of the Conrad-Johnson PF-1 preamp I lusted after. Nerdy, I know, but that's the truth. Yes, that also means that when my audio friends acquire or use CJ gear, I get nostalgic, smile, and give a thumbs-up.

CJ or no, just enjoy "Cry For Help," and pat yourself on the back, for knowing that Astley shouldn't be known for just dance music.
